As always the more members who attend the more information that changes hands, if you have a mechanical background this is your chance to shine and help other members with your advice.

The QN Hotel was originally built in the early 1900's as a two story boarding house to lodge farm hands and travelers and since then, has been extended into a hotel. The hotel was then called the Bridge Hotel because of the bridge next to it and the Queensland National Bank on the other side. The hotel had a few owners and one of them changed the name to its current name, Queensland National Hotel, the QN for short.
As Sundays are the most popular time of the week at the QN, management have organized something different - a BBQ with sausages, rib fillet, potato bake and salads. And for dessert, apple crumble served with custard or ice cream. The QN team have very kindly offered us the entire outside veranda and beer garden to have a big BBQ cookout. The veranda and beer garden are also conveniently located adjacent to the car park. Because of Covid regulations, the staff are investigating how to provide tea and coffee.

The area was named Birkdale most likely in the early 1880s by William Thorne, a Brisbane businessman who began buying land on Mooroondu Point from 1880. He built Mooroondu House and named the area Birkdale after his birthplace in England. Originally, the suburb of Thorneside was part of Birkdale. However, in 1917 part of the land once owned by William Thorne was named after him, and the suburb of Thorneside was created. Located in Birkdale, Aquatic Paradise Park West is not a park to be missed. With plenty of facilities, Aquatic Paradise Park West makes for a fun family day out with all members of the family - just BYO food and drinks for a picnic, or make good use of the electric barbecue facilities available here.

The Hinze Dam is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with an un-gated spillway across the Nerang River in the Gold Coast hinterland of South East, Queensland, Australia. The main purpose of the dam is for potable water supply of the Gold Coast region. The impounded reservoir is called Advancetown Lake. The earthfill dam structure is 108 metres high and 1,850 metres long. The 4,261-thousand-cubic-metre dam wall holds back the 310,730-megalitre reservoir when at full capacity. Dohles Rocks is an important habitat for shorebirds – birds that live primarily between the land and the sea. During summer, the number of shorebirds in the Moreton Bay area can swell to 50,000. Many of these birds travel between 25,000-60,000 kilometres per year to reach their breeding grounds and their time on the foreshore of the Moreton Bay area is known as their time to regain essential nutrients and weight that they have lost whilst travelling these long distances.

Bulimba’s Vic Lucas Park is located right on the bend of the Brisbane River, offering a beautiful vantage point for some relaxation. The park was named after a popular yachtsman in the thirties and forties who sailed from the clubhouse nextdoor to the park.
This will be a very easy day for those of us who like the quiet life and having a natter. Some members may even enjoy a “nanna nap” in the park while the grumpier ones amongst us will have the opportunity to have a “belly-ache”.
10:30am: Meet at the Vic Lucas Park, Bulimba [UBD Map 140 J20] to catch up with good friends and watch life pass us by. Access via Coutts or Quay Streets.

Rafting Ground Reserve is a lush sprawling oasis of green with a creek winding through it on the edge of Brookfield and Kenmore. The scenic reserve takes its name and its history back to when it was used by early settlers in the 1860s and 70s as a launching pad for timber that had been felled from the Sir Herbert Taylor Ranges forests and was transported to the site by bullock wagon.
