A View of the Dam

Saturday 24th of July

The Hinze Dam is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with an un-gated spillway across the Nerang River inthe Gold Coast hinterland of South East, Queensland, Australia. The main purpose of the dam isfor potable water supply of the Gold Coast region. The impounded reservoir is called Advancetown Lake. Theearthfill dam structure is 108 metres high and 1,850 metres long.

The 4,261-thousand-cubic-metre dam wallholds back the 310,730-megalitre reservoir when at full capacity. From a catchment area of 207 squarekilometres that includes the Numinbah Valley and Springbrook Plateau, with most being contained withinstate forests and national parks, the dam creates Advancetown Lake, with a surface area of 1,500 hectares. 

We will be visiting the Hinze Dam and partaking of lunch (at members’ expense) at the View Café, 100-200 Advancetown Rd, Advancetown, [Gold Coast Map 46 J5] located at the western end of the spillway.

Assemble at Arthur Earl Park, Nerang for BYO morning tea with an 11.30am departure to The View Café,Hinze Dam.

Driving Instructions:

Depart Arthur Earl Park turning right onto Nerang Broadbeach Rd. Pass over the Nerang River and take the second set of lights turning left onto Beaudesert Nerang Rd (State Route 90) passing throughNerang CBD. Continue straight at Junction of Mt Nathan Road (approximately 4km) onto where the roadbecomes Nerang Murwillumbah Rd (State Route 97), passing through Advancetown. Approximately 5km from theT Junction there will be a turn-off to the left onto Advancetown Rd (signposted [green] Advancetown Rd HinzeDam). Continue on Advancetown Rd which becomes Spillway Rd for approx. 2.3km and your destination, View

Café, will be on your left.

Travel time approximately 15 mins.

Assemble at Tygum Lagoon, Waterford West [UBD Map 262 J11] for morning tea with a 10:30am departureto The View Café, Hinze Dam to enjoy a scenic lunch by the water.

Driving Instructions:

Depart Tygum Lagoon. At the intersection, turn right and pass over the Logan River and take the first right onto Waterford Tamborine Rd [State Route 95] and continue on to Tamborine Village. At theroundabout, take the 3 rd exit onto Beaudesert Beenleigh Rd [State Route 92].

After approx. 3.4km turn left ontoMundoolin Connection Rd [State Route 90] which becomes Beaudesert Nerang Rd [State Route 90]. Continue onState Route 90 passing through Canungra and Mt Nathan when it becomes Mt Nathan Rd [State Route 90].Continue on until you reach the T Junction with Nerang Murwillumbah Rd.

Turn right onto Nerang Murwillumbah Rd [State Route 97] passing through Advancetown. Approx 5km from the T Junction there will be a turn-off to the left onto Advancetown Rd (signposted [green] Advancetown Rd Hinze Dam).

Continue on Advancetown Rd whichbecomes Spillway Rd for approx. 2.3km and your destination, View Café, will be on your left.

Approx. travelling time: 1 hr 15mins.
