Special Interest Vehicle (SIV) Concessional Registration

About concessional registration

Members of the Mercedes-Benz Club of Queensland (MBCQ), who are owners of vehicles more than 30 years old, can apply to receive the discounted ‘Special Interest Vehicle (SIV) Registration Concession’, available from Queensland Department of Transport & Main Roads (TMR).

You are advised to do your own research to become familiar with your responsibilities with regard to SIV Registration. Please review the ‘SIV Concession Scheme Guide’ (see LINKS section below).

As required by the TMR, the Club must provide evidence of your current membership status, including full details of your vehicle, on Club letterhead, signed by a Club official.

TMR advises that it is the registered owner’s responsibility to apply for, and/or remove, the SIV concession. The special interest vehicle concession can be applied to multiple eligible vehicles—there is no limit.

Special Interest Vehicles are issued S series plates. You are also permitted to have, or retain, personalised plates (via an application). Visit the Personalised Plates Queensland website (see LINKS section below), for more information.

Conditions & Restrictions

This concession is based on the vehicle having a very strict and limited road use which is reflected in the reduced fees and compulsory third party insurance premium. This is a privilege which comes with legal obligations.

The registered owner must comply with the conditions when using their vehicle, and ensure that anyone driving the vehicle is also familiar with these conditions. These conditions are:

To remain eligible for the SIV concession, the use of SIV registered vehicles is restricted to the following:

1. Club Membership
   Evidence of current membership with a Queensland incorporated vehicle Club must be provided on Club letterhead, or official Club documentation, at the time of application for a concession. It must be signed by a Club official and include the vehicle's details. It is a requirement that you keep your Club membership current at all times. If your membership lapses, you are required to notify TMR within 14 days.
   
   
2. Adhere to Restricted Use Criteria
   To remain eligible for the SIV concession, the use of SIV registered vehicles is restricted to the following:
   
   • Participating in rallies or events (including impromptu events) as organised or authorised by the Mercedes-Benz Club of Queensland. All rallies and events must be listed on their website or social media page.
   • Exhibiting the vehicle in displays, fetes or similar functions conducted for religious, charitable or educational purposes.
   • Use for ceremonial purposes (such as weddings, formals, funerals) involving immediate family members or as part of a sanctioned Club event, provided this is not done for a fee or reward. Preparing for, proceeding to, and returning from these activities.
   • Travel in order to have the vehicle repaired/inspected is allowed. There is no distance restriction, however, such travel must be reasonable and justifiable by the vehicle operator.
   • Road testing within a 30km radius from the place where the vehicle is garaged or is being repaired.

   A Special Interest Vehicle must NOT be used for:

   • General purposes - for example, to commute to and from the registered owner’s place of employment, running down to the shops and other forms of everyday vehicle use.
   • Hire or reward - a fee cannot be charged for use of the vehicle, and the owner cannot receive any condisersation or reward for supplying the vehicle.
   • Providing a booked hire service.
3. Retain Ownership of the Vehicle
   Advise the TMR if and when you dispose of the vehicle. Please also advise the Club immediately so that they can adjust your records accordingly.

How to Apply for 'Letter of Certification for SIV Registration'

1. Check that your MBCQ membership is current.
2. Check that the address recorded in the Club membership database is up-to-date.
3. Ensure that your vehicle is registered with the Club and is more than 30 years old.
4. Provide Proof of Eligibility as per your vehicle’s registration status below.
   
   
   
   Proof of Eligibility Documents
   
   Registration Certificates
   A copy of the Queensland Registration Certification will provide confirmation of the current Queensland address the vehicle is registered to. A copy of Interstate Registration papers, will provide proof the vehicle is registered in your name.
   
   ‘Getregocert’
   Your standard Registration Certification does not record the necessary vehicle Engine or Chassis numbers. In order to obtain them visit the ‘Getregocert’ website (see Links page). This online service allows you to apply for a free replacement registration certificate, which includes these details. You will be able to print and/or email the document.
   
   Current Queensland Safety Certificate (Roadworthy)
   An unassigned Safety Certificate is issued when your vehicle's details are not recorded in the Queensland Department of Transport & Main Roads system (for example, interstate registered vehicles), or do not match what is already recorded in our system. A list of ‘Approved Inspection Stations’ can be obtained from the AIS link (see LINKS below).
   
   Current Queensland Drivers Licence
   Provides confirmation of your current Queensland address.
   
   Proof of Ownership
   If it is a recent purchase, or a change of ownership, please supply a copy of the Purchase Document /Invoice, showing details of the vehicle's previous owner and new owner (you).
   
   
5. Download a copy of the Club's 'SIV Enquiry Letter', follow the instructions and email your application to the Membership/SIV Officer at this email address: siv@mbcq.com.au.

Once the Membership/SIV Officer has received and processed the application and above mentioned documents, you will be emailed the required ‘Letter of Certification for SIV Registration’. Please email the SIV Officer with any queries you may have.
